Native Cuban Maura Morales has dedicated herself to the themes of womanhood and the female body: For her work “Cherchez la femme!” (“Look for the Woman!”) she drew her inspiration from the pictures of American photographer Francesca Woodman. Together with her two dancers, the choreographer transports the unsettling effect of Woodman’s nude photography, which mostly features the artist herself, to the stage and poses the questions: What does it mean for an artist to use her own body as a medium – to be both subject and object at the same time? What role do ascriptions of beauty play and is this category still at all relevant? To live music by composer Michio Woirgardt, they set off in search of “the woman” as the perpetual source of conflict in peaceful times – and generate imagery that is just as disturbing as it is engaging.
