Reut Shemesh

In their short film “COBRA”, choreographer Reut Shemesh and filmmaker Ronni Shendar take a look at the power of the collective in the form of Gardetanz groups of the Rhineland carnival. The long-standing carnival tradition is associated with exuberant celebration, but is also inextricably linked to German history. Gardetanz caters for light entertainment and combines dance and military drill with an idealised femininity. Shemesh and Shendar uncover the longing for real identity and truthfulness hidden beneath blond wigs and blue velvet uniforms – if there is such a longing at all.
