Luisa Fernanda Alfonso

Masterpiece

In ”Masterpiece”, Luisa Fernanda Alfonso explores and embodies the tradition of character dances such as the Mexican Mariachi, which is – from today’s perspective – characterised by an excess of drama, expressiveness and sexualisation. Torn between nostalgia and irritation, fascination and frustration, the performer explores the question of whether and under what conditions these forms of expression are still legitimate today. Together with composer Peter Rubel, Alfonso explores the poetics of increasing and decreasing musical and dance dynamics, as well as constant repetition and change. The challenge of letting dances and songs coexist in unison and dissonance might lead to breaking off, to capitulation.
